Pricing design work is a difficult task, difficult because not every site is the same, nor should it be treated like it is. It would be like asking you to paint me a picture, but before you do, I want to know how much its going to cost me. Without any more information than that, its pretty tough to determine the amount of effort you're going to need to exert to complete the painting. It could be that all I want is a simple painting with one color and 3 strokes of the brush, or it could be that I want an elaborate billboard sized painting. Without more info, its really tough to say, "your site will cost this much".
You want your web site to be different than everyone else's, not some "cookie cutter template generated" thing that you've seen over and over and that customers inevitably will ignore. Saying something generic like "4 pages would be $X" is just ridiculous. Of course you want to get an idea of what you'll be spending, but keep in mind that like everything else, the more complex the site, the more expensive it will end up being just due to the amount of time necessary to complete the job. You might not have any idea of what is complex and what isn't, which is why we insist on contacting you for a quote. We do understand that without giving you some kind of idea of what we're charging, you'll back out of here and find someone with prices on their site, its inevitable and we understand that.
